Interpretations

A Simple Song started as a slow theme that I came up with on my computer (hence the name). The portion that sounds somewhat like the theme from Psycho was unintentional, but it still sounds cool.

The Music Box is a musical story of the process of sleep. A music box is played to help calm down the mind until at last the person is asleep. The Music Box is meant to be performed before Zwischenzug, which, along with Dawning, is a companion piece.

Zwischenzug is a tonal poem on two levels. Zwischenzug is a chess term that means”>The Music Box, is the transition from sleep to dream. However, it also is a tonal poem about the nature of struggle. The basic flow goes from Tension to Despair to Peace. Thus, Despair is the “inbetween move” between Tension and Peace.

Dawning completes the trilogy and is the representation of the man who wakes from a night of slumber. The main melody starts in a minor key and ends in a major key to represent the difference. Likewise, the finale shows the energy that is rejuvinated.

Threnody is a piece that was first performed on guitar. I then transposed it on my computer to a classical piece. A threnody is like a dirge or a memorium, but this version sounds more like a new age style classical song. It’s a slower piece with sustained chords behind the melody.

Novum is a song about what is new. When I listen to it, I am reminded somewhat of Aaron Copeland. It is easy to picture such scenes as a spring day when listening to this song.

Gloria is difficult to explain. The main theme was actually fairly easy and straightforward to come up with, resulting in this clip. After that, I worked on it a bit and made it somewhat longer as heard here. As I wrote it, the only impressions I had in my mind were a sort of triumphal entry. That’s why I chose the name Gloria, Latin for glory.
